My Meditation journey

We know how to take care of the body. People have different opinions about which food is healthy and which one isn’t, but there is no doubt that some universally accepted norms exist for keeping our body healthy. Nobody doubts that exercise is a great habit. Everyone knows that drinking enough water is good.

But what about the mind? What keeps a mind healthy? What type of exercise will let us create and maintain the best state of mind possible? This is where meditation comes to the scene.

Sam Harris makes a good argument for meditation. He says, our mind is the only tool we have that we take everywhere. So, a well-trained mind means, we will take better decisions on every life challenge. Which will increase the quality of our life.

I won’t go through all the benefits of meditation in this post. I think you already know most of them. If not, you can easily find out with a quick google search. I am writing this post to tell you my meditation journey.

My meditation experience has been very interesting. I went from a total skeptic to a big believer. I went from knowing nothing about meditation to having followed 4 different gurus.

By the end of the post, you’ll get to know all the 4 stages I went through. So read the whole post to find that out where you stand now and let me know in the comments.

My Meditation Journey

When I was a kid, I used to think meditation gave you super powers. I thought it’s something that Yogis use to open their third eye. Yeah, I was a very stupid little kid. In my teenage years though, I got very interested in science. I read everything I could about latest scientific discoveries. Those days have laid the foundation for the rational human being that I am today, and I am forever grateful for that. My affinity with science started to make me question everything spiritual. I became the generic case of the nerd who denies anything that is not proven. For some reason I never even looked for any research paper done on meditation. I just assumed it was a hoax. If I had looked however, I would have seen how famous neuroscientists are big proponents of meditation. I would have found out that a lot of research have found concrete benefits of meditation like regulating blood pressure, increasing attention span etc. I guess I had to learn it the hard way.

In my late teen years, severe depression took me in its grasp. I was so trapped that I thought suicide was the only way out. But, whenever I went to commit suicide, I would think- what if the tomorrow was better? What if all of this was temporary and soon, I’ll have the kind of life I want? One day I just gave up the idea of committing suicide and started to seek help. On my journey seeking help, I found ‘The Power of Now’. This book satisfied my rational mind to some extent. I could see how spirituality was not about the afterlife, but to have the best possible life here and now. The more I got familiar with the work of the writer of the book- Eckhart Tolle, the more I started to trust him. He teaches full body awareness meditation in his book, and that was my first taste of meditation. It felt good. Also, the more I practiced, my awareness burned brighter than ever. Soon the depression was gone. Life seemed worth fighting for. I started to dream about the future.

Dreaming about the future sounds romantic. But done inappropriately, it causes anxiety. Severe anxiety. Soon after depression was gone, I had found a new friend- you guessed it- anxiety. It crippled me. But there was a rush too. It felt somewhat masochistically good! I didn’t want to leave worrying. I thought it made me more prepared for the future. It was supposed to be my great shield against future trouble. Yet, soon I realized all it did was to suck the life out of me. I had lost the joy of simply enjoying the little things in life. My ambition blinded me from my own well-being. I started to seek help again.

I saw a Ted talk. The speaker had one of the weirdest names I ever heard. His name was ‘Dandapani’. He had an ugly white paint in his forehead, which made him look like a freak. The talk was so good though! I was instantly a fan. That talk convinced me that meditation is something I should get serious about. Then I saw the video done by ‘What I’ve learned’. This is a YouTube channel that talks about some very controversial health and well being fads. But his video about meditation is pure gold. I started to meditate for five minutes every day.

Dandapani
Even before a week had past, I saw improvement. I got control over my anger. I worried less. I was happier overall. Since then I’ve never looked back. Now, my daily routine consists of 10 minutes of meditation along with shower, exercise and listening to podcasts.

Recently, I had installed the waking up app in my phone. It’s made by the infamous neuroscientist Sam Harris. His rational and scientific arguments in favour of meditation has made me see the practice in a very different light. It was something that made me feel good, so I kept doing it. Now I know it’s not only a practice for well-being but also a very potent tool to sharpen our mind and harness the fullest potential of human spirit.

I highly recommend you try out the app. It’s very beginner friendly. And if you are a skeptic, this may give you some different perspectives to investigate.

How to be a GOOD Teacher

I’ve had a few good teachers in my life. I love them, but hate the fact that there were so few of them! Being a good teacher is one of the most inspiring things that a person can do. Good teachers invoke interest about the subject matter and make her students fall in love with learning and growing. Thus, they harvest curious and thoughtful minds.

I’ve always been inspired by these teachers whenever I found one. I would turn out to be far worse than I am now if not for them. So, I have always tried to be one. I tried to replicate their good traits in me. Thus, I formulated and tested many theories about how to be a good teacher.

There’s more, I took Barbara Oakley’s course “Learning how to learn” and ” Mindshift”. These courses have instilled in me good learning habits that I think a good teacher should teach his students.

Here are the steps towards becoming a good teacher:

Show passion:

A good teacher shows passion about what she teaches, she loves her subject and this makes learning a more fulfilling experience for the students. Students can smell from miles away whether the teacher is interested in the subject or not. The boredom of the teacher gets transferred in the students and they don’t feel like learning. But if the teacher herself loves the topic, then the students will feel pumped up when learning about the topic too.

Study well before you teach:

If you don’t know the subject well then don’t teach it. Let someone else teach it. Just like passion, students can smell lack of knowledge from miles away. It is very tedious and uninspiring to learn from someone who is nervous and can’t answer questions. Before you teach something, have a plan and study well.

Use learning tricks on students:

There are things that work and things that don’t in the study realm. The science is clear on that. Highlighting one’s book doesn’t work. Whereas recalling, testing and explaining are the best learning tricks. Let your students recall what you just taught them. Better yet, make them teach you. Teaching is one of the most effective form of learning. Test them often. Testing has been proven scientifically to increase competence over a subject.

Know their dreams:

Your students have dreams. They have come to learn from you for a specific purpose. Know that and exploit the knowledge. Not everyone is interested in learning. Some students just want to score high on tests without much efforts. Don’t bother teaching them in depth lessons. It will only make them bored. Rather teach them how to score better in the next exam and show them how today’s lesson will help them score better. Thus, they will be loyal to you and you will fulfill your purpose to them.

Train Like a dog:

Train your students like a dog! what does that mean? It’s nothing but the old formula of the psychologist Ivan Pavlov. Reward them when they show improvement. But, don’t forget to punish them when they slack off.

Remember, as a teacher you have the power to shape another human’s whole life. Encourage them and instill passion in them. May all your students be superstars in their field of work.

How to be a superstar in 5(or more) years

Elon Musk, Mr Beast, Bill Gates, Lionel Messi what do all of them have in common? Keep on reading to find the answer.

I think I have one formula for superstardom. Definitely there are other ones too. Like- be born in a rich family who can sponsor you (*cough* Kylie Jenner *cough*) or have a famous father etc.

But my formula is for the noobs of the world, for people who have nothing (but want everything). To understand the formula you have to listen to me rant for a minute… got the time? Good. Here it goes:

1. The Almighty Macro:

What is macro? Macro is whatever’s bigger than you (Your industry or platform). If you are an YouTuber, then macro is YouTube. If you are an actor, then macro is the film industry. If you are a student, then macro is your school, or the degree you are after.. you get the idea, right?

By the way, you are the micro.

When the macro is booming, the micros in it also boom. If the stock market is doing well (its called the market index), then individual stocks do well too. When the internet started booming; Google, Facebook became billion dollar companies.

You know why gaming channels did so well on YouTube? Because, the YouTube algorithm loves them. Why? Because gamers post long videos and they post often. Think of a channel like ‘Film Theory’- their videos are hard to make! Those need a lot of effort. So, MatPat can’t post everyday! But gamers can, and YouTube algorithm loves that.

Thus, the macro supported gamers, and they boomed. PewDiePie and other gaming channels rode this wave, and became so big. (PewDiePie had some other advantages too, check out this video by MatPat How PewDiePie conquered YouTube )

2. The SnowBall effect:

Mozart Started composing before his teenage years,
Elon Musk started programming at the age of 11,
Warren Buffet also bought his first stock when he was 11!

Almost all of world’s greats had a headstart like this. Messi, Bill Gates, Thomas Alva Edison.. you name it.

Mr Beast Started his channel on 2012. But only started getting serious views from 2017.

What does all this tell you? Nobody becomes famous overnight. It takes time and patience a lot. You have to lay the groundwork for year after year.

We only see people’s successes, but if you dig deeper, you will see toil, sacrifices, heartbreaks and patience.. a lot, lot of them. It is rare that somebody is an overnight success.

The Formula: Get in early

So, to be a superstar, you have to find a macro that is going to boom (like the internet did), or favor your style of doing things (like YouTube did to gamers). Then, before the boom even starts, you have to get into the industry and start putting in regular work.

According to Elon Musk (in his JRE podcast), these are what’s gonna boom in the future: Bioengineering and Artificial intelligence. Other promising industries are renewable energy, space travel, nanotechnology, data science etc.

Find out an industry that you love, but also hasn’t matured yet (like smartphone industry). Then start putting in work. A lot of work. When the boom comes, you will be ready to ride the wave and be a superstar!
